The second largest religion in Nepal is called Buddhism though the founder of Buddhism known as a Siddhartha Gautm was born in the place called Lumbini in southwestern part of Nepal in about 623 BC and in about 35 years later he founded buddhims and died in the age of 80, the Buddhism could not become the main religion of Nepal. Though this is a second largest religion in Nepal, its importance is significance in the life of Nepalese people.
Gautam Buddha the fully enlightened one is regarded as a founder of Buddhism. He attainded the transcendental wisdom and pointed out the way from the world of suffering to one beyond, to undying and for liberation across the wisdom and beyond. He was a great teacher, philosopher, master and god, his life is based on compassion for humanity, ideal of salvation for all, the discipline of devotion and service for universe, he is the giver of highest truth.
Gautam Buddha was born in about 5th century BC. In the garden of lumbini of Nepal as a crown prince of the then kingdom of kapilavastu and his father was known as a suddhodhana and the mother Mayadevi.
It is related in different books about the birth of Buddha as a great incident in the humanity and explained that , one day, Mayadevi saw a dream of white elephant and the same elephant was the bodhisattva who enter in her womb and she became pregnant. The white elephant is the symbol of auspiciousness and in about 7 months period his mother set out to visit her parental house and on the way in the beautiful grove of lumbini, she felt a pain in her stomach and due to the pain she hold the branch of papal tree. Automatically her armpit opened and she delivered the baby without any physical pain. At the time of birth, the earth was shaken and the flowers and milk were poured from the sky to honor the birth of Buddha. At the same time, the lotus flower sprang on the earth on which siddartha gautam put his feet and walked seven steeps proclaiming his destiny.
After the birth of Buddha, his father and family were exalted with joy and they called the royal astrologers and consulted the fate of baby, among the astrologers, some opined that the prince either will be a world emperor or an ascetic person. The second prediction tortured to the king and he tried to avoid all the activities and functions which may influence him to become a monk. He enclosed him in his beautiful palace with providing the luxury of life. He was arrange to marriage with beautiful prince of yasodhara in the age of 16 and in about 9 years the got a son named Rahula. He was provided beautiful ladies to enjoy the life and also different joyous activities to prevent him from holy life.
Once he saw 3 different phases of life like the old man, sick person and the corpse carrying to the cremation ground. These three activities disturbed the mind of the young prince but suddenly he saw a ascetic person contemplation in meditation. He thought that in this way he may avoid the repetition of the suffering of life. So one day he decided to leave his world life and in the age of 29 he set out from his palace leaving his wealth, family and luxury life and went to wander about the bank of the holy river ganges. He cut his hair and became a monk, and in about 6 years of arduous meditation, he achieved the enlightenment. He went in different parts of India and Nepal to share his knowledge and wisdom and in the age of 80 he achieve the Nirvana means the complete freedom from the cycle of rebirth and reincarnation. In the life of Buddha, several important incidents happened in the full moon day so for the followers of Buddhism the full moon day is secret. The Buddha was born in the full moon day, he was enlightened in full moon day, he gave first sermon in fool moon day and he died in the full moon day.
Buddhism is the religion of enlightenment and the religion without god. Buddha rejected the authority of Vedas and also discarded the hindu caste systems. He founded Buddhism as a pragmatic religion and based in a simple philosophy of four noble truths and eight fold paths. The four noble truths are the followings: suffering exist in life, there is a cause of suffering, there is an end of suffering and there is a way to overcome sufferings. The way of overcoming the above mentioned sufferings Buddha founded the eight fold middle way which is as follow: Right understanding, Right thought, Right speech, Right action, Right livelihood, Right effort, Right mindfulness, Right concentration. Following these four noble truths and eightfold enlightenment paths one can purify his body, speech and mind and achieve the full emancipation from the worldly life and become a Buddha the enlighten one.
There are three states of existences which are impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and egolessness. According to Buddhism, impermanence is the nature of all living things, everything which has an existence ultimately perishes. An individual formed bu five aggregates or mind and body is constantly changing. All things are impermanent, therefore they arise and pass away. Another characteristic feature of existence is unsatisfactory state. Unpleasant things create events which are difficult to endure. They also cause suffering, sorrow, sadness, misery or pain. Happiness and pleasure, though everybody likes, are transient and bound to change. The third characteristic feature of existence is egolessness and no soul.
In about 300 years after the life of Buddha, buddhst organized the world Buddhist conference in India and finally the convension devided the Buddhist in two principle school which is known as a Mahayana and theravedin Buddhist. In the lapse of time, another school of Buddhism came in existence which is known as a vajrayana those who worship the diamond like symbol as a symbol of indistructibility. |
