The term hindu is a geographical origin and is derived from the name originally given to the inhabitants that settled near the river sindhu at Pakistan presently. The migrated Persian people called to the people of sindu to Hindu as they could not pronounce the word sindu properly. Thus the people living in the bank of the river sindu became hindu and their codex was called Hinduism. It is believed that the Persian arrived in the sindu valley in around the 6th century BC. When the territory around the sindu was ruled by Persian empire. In the lapse of time many rulers and invader arrived and ruled and left the subcontinent, the name hindu became famous and even today. Hinduism is the oldest religion of the world which is practice even today in the subcontinent, Indonesia, and various parts of the world brought by the migrant Indians and Nepalis.
There is controversy about the exact date of the foundation of the Hinduism as this is an eternal religion. The religion do not have a single founder and do not have the single scripture which is the official one like a testament in christianism and tripitaka in Buddhism and kuran in muslim. There are several books which have their branches and also do have many gods and goddess. The oldest text of Hinduism is called Vedas and they are also 4 in total. After the Vedas, there are upanisadhas and they are 108 in number and after them there are puranas, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Bhagawat gita, some texts books of the different rituals and rule and regulations. So there is a vast number of literature which is almost impossible to read all as it is popularly said that to read all the hindu texts one need to born 3 or 4 times. This religion is also known as a sanatana dharma which means the eternal religion which do not have neither beginning nor end.
In each religion has their basic principles and in Hinduism also there are several. They are generally known as the belief on Brahman or universal soul, karma or action, Dharma or religion, Samsara or the cycle of life and rebirth, and Mokshya or salvation. Salvation is the end of the lifecycle and the total dissolution on the supreme Brahma or the univershal soul.
There are various philosophies which advocates that by removing false knowledge a man can emancipate his soul from the constraints of transmigration. In Hinduism there are 6 schools of philosophies, they are mentioned below: Nyaya, Vaiseshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purva mimasmsa and uttar mimamsa. Yoga involves in both intellectual and moral execise and has eight steps such as restraint, observances, posture, breathing exercises, withdrawal of senses, concentration, deditation and trance.
There are several characterstics in the religion which helps to differentite from other religion to the Hinduism. They are mentioned below, reverence on Vedas, belief in God as a supreme beings, emphasis on ritualism, acceptance of philosophical notions, belief in reincarnation, belief in caste system, belief in karma, belief in four ashrams, belief in guru o master, hospitality etc.
There are many gods and goddess in hindu religion such as shiva, visnu, brahma are the hindu trinity which have their own function of destruction, protection and creation respectively. In Nepal, brahma is not worshipped so the duty of Brahma is assigned to shiva shich is considered as a god of creation and destruction. In Nepal, we can not see the temple of Brahma but of other gods yes. Also there are goddess which is developed in a concept of the consort of the gods. So the goddess of learning is known as a saraswoti, the goddess of power is known as a kali or durga.
