In Nepal, there is another religion or creed called Jhankrism. It is said to have originated about 400 years ago, among Thakalis when they got a set back from Lamaism after lamas had burnt away the sacred books and writings. As a result of this act, Jhankrism went into the background. This religion is a kind of shamanistic cult and does not have any god or sacred image. Animism in which a conciliation or memorial ceremony to the spirit is held is called shamanism. There are no complicated and long rituals or paraphernalia in it. Mainly it is based on witchcraft and sorcery, and it is also a common among the Tamangs, Magars, Chepangs, Gurungs, etc. This religion is very strongly followed by Chepangs. Nowadays this religion is more commonly used as a strategy in exorcism to ward off evil spirits and witches. There are some gompas dedicated to Jhankrism in the village of Nabrungkot, Panchgaun, Jomsom, Thimi, etc.
The Jhankri cult is found throughout the Nepal and among all the ethnic group of Nepal but among all of them, Tamangs main one. This is the second one after the kirantis.the priest of Jhankri is called Bompo who conducts the driving away ceremony of the spirits when people fall ill. He performs worship and does animal sacrifice at a shrine for worshiping and sacrifices called shipda than. This sacrifice is made to the earth deity in the month of October, November. The Jhnkri priest also propitiates the gods and spirits. They also worship clan deity and earth. The jhankri priest is choosen from the clan member of the Tamangs. They are also called Dhamis.
A Jhankri serves as an intermediary between his clients and threatening forces on the universe. Jhankri deal with unpredictable events with malevolent world of spirits. compare a priest with jhankri than it is evident that a priest deals with predictable events and rituals. Jhankri contactgs spirits by going in a trance state, usually signaled by trembling. His healing ceremony may involve night long drumming, animal sacrifice or incense Puja, etc. some jhankri give herbal medicines or also do some physical manipulation. Belief and healing are characteristic of jhankris. They appear in almost in all religious festivals with their drums and with colorful dresses and some feathers in there head using as a crown and also it symbolizes the victory over the evil spirits.
