The term tantra means to “weave” which stands for a mode of religious pursuit that consists in forming relationships and interaction with the immanent gods and deities that fill the earth and the skies and the term similarly denotes to extend or to rule. Tantra is also known as a religious scriptures or it denotes a set of words devoted to the worship of shakta revealed by shiva in the form of a dialogue between himself and his consort. Tantra is belongs to the various sects and religion which is considered the powerful means to express the offering to their respective deities. Tantras were often regarded as the vast but complex encyclopedia of knowledge used as a bizarre means to rise to religious heights. There are generally several topics of tantra which are as follows. Creation, destruction, worship of gods, spiritual exercise, rituals, good deeds and meditation. Some scholars mention tantra as a system of ritual action which leads the practitioner towards salvation and also magical power. Tantra is full of spells, cosmograms means mandala and gestures.
In tantric mode of worship emphasis is laid on the supremacy of the female principle. There is also a confirmation of older cults of the mother goddess. According to hindu tantras, the female principle is the manifestation of cosmic energy which activates all matters. The male is a passive agent which can be energized only by the female. Buddhist also believe that the universe consists of an active and a passive agent. The union of which achieves absolute oneness and inactivity however they assign the active role to the male and symbol called wisdom. In both the systems of tantras the metaphysical notion of merging the principles as a means or stabilizing the universe is conceptualized as a divine couple erotically united. The tantric deities of the both religion either hindus or Buddhist are fierce and pacific manifestations, they are multi faced and multilimbed that is the reason why, we can see many gods and goddess in the temples of Nepal in their struts with multiorgan manifestations. They are also considered the deities depicted to wardoff the evil spirits and malevolent deities and to protect the good.
The vast literature of Tantra has got several interesting features of worship. Initiation is most essential, preliminary to the adoption of the Tantra form of worship. At the time of initiation one of the many mantras with which a deity is worshipped is communicated to the initiate, who is asked to keep it secret. The mantras and the particular deity is worshipped and as the worshipper culminates his spiritual strength, than he is entitled to a superior type of initiation. There are two types of worship which is known as spirit rapping and rites which is body purifying exercises. They also help in the slow realization of the supreme ideal of the tantra form of worship, which is the identity of the individual soul with the supreme soul. The mantras in which various deities are invoked also consist of one or more syllables which are explained indifferent schools in special ways. During the tantra practice, different activities are performed such as sacrifice of seeds or life, saying prayers with offering of water and other offering objects etc. priests or other special people are used during the tantra ceremony.
In Nepal, tantra is one of the popular way of appease the benevolent and malevolent deities which is practiced in all over the country and among the different religions, sects and creeds as well as in different social groups. In kathmandu valley, there are several temples were build to worship and practice the rites. Such as the temple of Taleju temple of kathmandu Durpar Square, Nyatapola temple of Bhaktapur, Bagalamukhi temple of Patan, chinnamasta bhagawati of Changunarayan, Batuki Bhairav near the Tundikhel etc are the popular temples of tantra practice.
