Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang is located north of Annapurna and at an average altitude of 4,000m is geologically and culturally part of the Tibetan plateau. The valleys are arid and dry with colourful rock formations containing many cave dwellings high up in the cliffs. The first trekking parties were allowed into Upper Mustang in 1992 and there are still very few people (about 700 trekkers each year) visiting Upper Mustang as a result it is one of the few places left where one can see undisturbed Tibetan culture. Mustang is a remote semi-independent Tibetan Kingdom with a walled capital called Lo Manthang. Upper Mustang was once part of Tibet and was used by the salt caravans crossing the Himalaya into Nepal. It became an independent kingdom in 1380 and the current royal family can trace their lineage back to this time. Upper Mustang Trek which offers a spectacular trekking into the remote Trans-Himalayan mountain area with Tibetan influence culture. The high desert region of the Tibetan influence, Kaligandaki, from the Tibetan border south to Kagbeni is generally referred to as Upper Mustang. Explore the thousand years of old monastery, caves, local tribes and scenic beauties of the different landscapes. Make an adventure starting from world’s deepest gorge Kaligandaki Region into world’s highest regions of Lo-Mangthang Valley that passes through an almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks. The trek passes through high peaks, passes, glaciers, and alpine valleys. The thousands years of isolation has kept the culture, lifestyle and heritage remain unchanged for centuries and to this date. The houses in Mustang are mostly made from stone and sun baked mud bricks. The city wall and the four storey palace in Lo-Manthang are some of the beautiful architectures of Mustang region.

Upper Mustang Trek begins with a spectacular scenic flight of 20 minutes over the mountains with views of 8,000ers such as Annapurna & Dhaulagiri, brings you at Jomsom. This trek allows us to explore a weird and wonderful landscape of eroded conglomerate cliffs, colored by natural earth coloring – red, yellow, brown and blue. Trekking across passes of up to 4100m, we also trek through a succession of picturesque white painted Mustang villages and Tibetan monasteries, set against a backdrop of the distant snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. We have a day to explore our ultimate destination for excursion in Lo Manthang, a fairy-tale walled city and the capital of Mustang. This enlightening trekking adventure to Mustang in Nepal entices to them who love to explore special part of the Himalaya and finally by flight from Jomsom to Pokhara.

Day 1 Arrive in TIA, Kathmandu

We warmly welcome you to Kathmandu, International airport the capital city of the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal. After you check in you will have plenty of time when you can take a rest or hang around in the city else visit our office, it actually depends upon your interest and condition. So today is your first day in this beautiful valley. In the evening a welcome dinner is organized at an excellent traditional Nepalese Restaurant where you will enjoy a Nepalese cultural program as well as fine meal.

Day 2Kathmandu sightseeing and Trek Preparation

After breakfast, we start an interesting tour around Kathmandu which will be a guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu. Some of these landmarks include the World Heritage Sites: the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and BUdhiists shrine(Buddhanath) which is one of the largest Stupas of the world. After our visit to many historical and spiritual places or temples there will be a pre-trip discussion where we will meet or trek leader also other team members. Day 3Kathmandu to Pokhara [823m/2,700ft]: 6 hours

Trekking staff will come to your Hotel early in the morning to pick you up and then the tourist bus leaves around 7am. Enroute we will see more of countryside of Nepal that offers greeneries, rivers, farms and beautiful mountain sceneries. We will reach Pokhara in the afternoon at around 2pm where Pokhara offers magnificient views of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhare, five peaks of Annapurna and others. Also Pokhara is city of lakes and has numerous beautiful lakes. We can explore the most accessible and beautiful, Fewa Lake during the afternoon -enjoy boating too. Explore, relax and dine by tranquil Lake Fewa. You can even do some shopping during evening hours else rome around beautiful city.

Day 4Fly to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni [2,858m/9,375ft]:3-4 hours

Early morning we will fly Northwest that is Jomsom, the district headquater of Mustang from Pokhara toward the great portal between the snows covered peaks of Annapurna and Daulagiri which is a super scenic flight of 20 minutes. You will enjoy the well-raised massifs of more than 8000 meters, and the deepest gorge on this planet. Jomsom is a large town, headquarter of the Mustang region which is also a major village on the Kaligandaki area linking the age old Trans-Himalayan Salt Trade route to Tibet. From Jomson onwards it is very windy in the afternoon. We continue on the gradual path on the Kali Gandaki river bed for about 3 hours and finally reach at Ekley-bhatti village. After good stop here an hour of easy walk takes us to Kagbeni, which lies at the bank of two rivers which is an interesting windswept villages situated on the main age old Trans-himalayan salt trade route to Tibet via Upper Mustang area. In Kagbeni a major tributory, Kak Khola, coming from Muktinath, meets Mustang Khola, and from there the river is called the Kali Gandaki.

Day 5Kagbeni to Chele[3050m/10,004ft]:5-6 hours

Our journey start once we complete formalities and we trek onwards the riverside of Kaligandaki up stream. So, during our walk we will have vivid place to stop through the sandy and windy trials. This trial follows the up and downhill and leads us towards the east bank of Kaligandaki and downhills ie. North to Tangbe village. The town is confusion because of narrow lanes amongst washed houses which is surrounded by fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. Then we trek and cross the river and heads up to the huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel that the Kaligandaki follows. Then the trek leaves the Kali Gandaki calley and climbs steeply up a rocky small passage to Chele.

Day 6Chele to Syanbochen[3475m/11,398ft]:6-7 hours

Today we climb to Taklam La Pass through plateaus and narrow stretches with views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda. Actually today we walk further to Eklo Bhatti. The trial then descends further on a pleasant to the village of Samar. We relax and go into another valley along the surrounding of cool streams and junipers trees. From Samar we climb the trial that goes above the village to the ridge then descending steeply to a stream. Further walk to reach Syanbochen. We also pass by a famous Ramchung Cave and explore surroundings ancient unique village area.

Day 7Syanbochen to Ghyami [3520m/11,546ft]:5-6 hours

After breakfast the trial climbs gently to Yamda la passing through a few teahouses, chortens and local villages with a Tibetans styles houses with open Varanda. We cross mountain passes and an avenue of popular trees and fields of Barley. Nyi Pass is the highest point of trek so this trial would be a little longer one. Gyayami is surrounded by large fields most of which are barren also this village is the third largest village in the Lo region. Overnight at Ghayami.

Day 8Ghyami to Charang [3500m/11,480ft]:4-5 hours

we start our trek with a pleasant walk after our breakfast. After we cross Ghayami Khola we climb to a plateau and passes the longest and most spectacular Mani walls of Nepal which is a sacred stone wall made by the followers of Buddhism. From the end of the wall the trial heads east to the village of Charang Chu canyon with a maze of fields, willow trees and houses separated by stone walls at the top. There is also a huge white dzong and red Gompa to get to our teahouse for tonight’s stop.

Day 9Charang to Lo-Mangthang [3700m/12,136ft]: 5-6 hours

Today we descend from Charang Chu canyon to cross the Charang Chu then climb steeply after crossing the river. We will see the magnificient view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna and Bhrikuti peak. Further the trial ascends to the 3,850m windy pass of Lo Manthang from where we will have the first views of the walled city appears magnificient with its hills on the Tibetan Border of Lo Manthang.

Day 10Explore Lo-Mangthang

A day is less to explore this outstanding cultural centre. Today we will explore the surrounding areas. We will visit Namgyak Gompa which is situated on a hilltop and serves as an important monastery of local community and also as a local court. and Tingkhar, a village of around 40 houses also the last main village to the northwest of Lo-Mangthang. If you want to stroll back to hotel, you can else there is another option to visit the Tall Champa Lakhang “God House” the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the entrance Hall which are the main magnetize of Lo Mangthang trip. Also you may have visit to the four-story building of the Royal Palace where the Mustang’s King stayed as well as the surrounding panoramic views of the Himalaya.

Day 11Lo-Mangthang to Drakmar [3810m/12,500ft]: 6-7 hours

Instead of following the trial south to Charang the route we came by we trek to Drakmar that is southwest along an indistinct trial that passes the irrigated fields of the city. The trial makes descend beside a stream visiting ancient Ghar Ghompa more than 1200 years old and meet the guru as our primary figure. Actually this is known as the oldest Ghompas in Nepal which is famous for rock paintings and said that it’s the legend for fulfilling our good wishes because of that this Gompa is still famous.
We then explore the local area in our remaining time.

Day 12Dhakmar to Ghiling [3806m/12,484ft]:5-6 hours

Today we continue down to the valley Ghiling in a dusty and windy trial. We walk for about 5-6 hours for our overnight stay. After we arrive back to Ghiling and lunch we will travel around the surrounding of Ghiling village where we can enjoy the majestic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Nigiri.

Day 13Ghiling to Chuuksang[3050m/10,004ft]:5-6 hours

The path trekking back to Chuuksang is easy working down enjoying the Tibetan lifestyle and culture. Wonderful scenery and the amazing views of Nilgiri, Tilicho and others tremendeous Himalayan peaks can be seen during our trek. Overnight at teahouse.

Day 14Chhuksang to Jomsom [2700/8,856ft]:6-7 hours

Todays trek is the long is for about 6-7 hours and is the long one. Today we walk down to the southern border of the Mustang region to Kagbeni. After having lunch at Kagbeni we will head to Jomsom for out overnight stop. Or, if you can spare one more day, our guide would take you to Muktinath as well.

Day 15Fly back to Pokhara

After, we have breakfast we check in the airport to fly back to Pokhara which is 30 minutes dramatic flight between gorge of the two huge mountains Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On arrival at Pokhara airport guide will transfer to the lakeside hotel. At the leisure time you can explore the lake and the city itself. Overnight at hotel.

Day 16Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

Early morning after breakfast we drive back to Kathmandu. If you hold on the left side of the vehicle you will have the advantage to enjoy the sceneries through the route. Upon arrival in Kathmandu you will be transferred to hotel along with your luggage’s. After you relax you will have leisure time when you can do shopping and celebrate last dinner of this tour. Overnight at Kathmandu.

Day 17Fly home

The adventurous trip ends today, we bid goodbye to the mountainous Nepal. Hoping that you enjoyed the tour we will be transferred to airport approximately 3 hours before the scheduled flight.
