The Everest Base Camp trek is well known trek with loaded bunch of scenery and experiences. The Everest region comprises of its main attraction as Mount Everest, which is standing at 8,848 m the world’s highest mountain, as well as several other peaks. You will enjoy the vistas of these mighty peaks as you trek towards – Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. This region is famous not only for its proximity to the world’s highest mountain but also for its Sherpa villages and monasteries with their virtually unchanged unique culture. Solu has received countless trekkers and mountaineers from all over the world. Solukhumbu has developed to a stage where many options are possible from a full-scale expedition with tents and porters to an independent trek using the local lodges. Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976, covers much of this region. This fascinating land surrounded by high mountains is a real paradise for mountaineers & trekkers. Mentioning about the flora and fauna of this region; there are eight ecosystems in the High Himalayas ranging from the juniper forests in the valleys to the alpine areas with glaciers, snow and rock. Some of the plants and trees present in the forest are of Blue pine, birch, rhododendrons, fir etc. Apart from these 160 vascular pants that have been recorded here, 21 are widespread species. The park is also habitat for the rare species such as the red panda, snow leopard, Musk deer, Himalayan tahr, marten, Himalayan mouse hare (pika) and over 208 species of birds can be observed here which includes the Impeyan pheasant, snow cock, Blood pheasant, red billed cough, Lammergeyer etc.
The best and the easiest way to Everest Base Camp is by the flight to Lukla for which you can easily get flight from Kathmandu. The main part of the trekking starts after you reach to Namche bazaar after two days trek. Our representative will pick you up at the airport. Get a feel for the streets the first day, absorb the sights and sounds, or rest at the hotel. We discuss the journey in the evening.
Kathmandu, the capital city, boasts an intense mix of cultures and religions unique to Nepal. Turn the Buddhist prayer wheels at Swoyambhu- the monkey temple and meet the steady gaze of the Buddha’s eyes at the famous Boudhanath stupa. Flights take off early in the morning in clear weather for Lukla and afford fantastic views of the mountains. (It is advisable to be seated to the left of the aircraft) Lukla is a beautiful town and boasts sights of the Kongde and Kongde South mountains. Look around Lukla and start trekking. We spend the night in Phakding, around three hours away from Lukla on foot.
We head North, on the banks of the Dudh Koshi river (dudh means milk in Nepali and the river owes this name to its color) which is a white-water river considered too dangerous for kayaking, till we enter the Sagarmatha National Park at Jor Salle. We cross a suspension bridge above the intersection of two white water rivers (Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi) and get to Namche Bazaar at 3340m, a bustling Sherpa village. We see the Everest for the first time, on foot, today.
Set in a natural Amphitheatre looking across to the jagged ridge of Kongdi Ri(6187m), Namche Bazar is one of the most attractive settlements in the Khumbu region. It is an ideal place to spend a rest day for acclimatization at a high altitude before heading off. We will have a full day rest so that we won’t face any problem ahead. Today we make a short acclimatization trek up to Khumjung, a delightful Sherpa village above Namche. You have full day leisure for wonderful panoramic view or wander around the market You can also enjoy the splendid views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawche, and Kwangde and so on.
We start by walking uphill through forests of pine to Tengboche at 3885m, roughly 5 hours from Namche. This is where the winter snow line begins in the area. We can also trek on to Pangboche an hour away if we feel up to it. This area has an optional deluxe hotel along with the regular teahouse.
We trek on through forests that house several wild animals we might be able to see if we keep alert. These include 118 species of birds and several rare mammals including the musk deer, the elusive snow leopard, red pandas, the Himalayan black bear, langur monkeys, among others. Pangboche is a large mountain village, the oldest in the area and houses a very old monastery. Our trek today also takes us to the top of a ridge from where panoramic views of the Taboche, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lotse and Cholatse mountains warm quench our eyes’ thirst. We spend the night in the village of Dingboche at 4350m, with its chortens and prayer flags.
About a thousand meters higher than our last acclimatization day, we spend the day around Dingboche, taking an uphill hike to Chhu Kumbri at 4700m which affords fantastic views and back to Dingboche for a good night’s sleep.
The trail climbs steeply out of Dingboche past a chorten and ascends the valley gradually to Dugla at the end of the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. From here we have a short, steep climb up to Chukpo Lari, a beautiful, yet poignant place where there is a line of memorials in tribute to the climbers who have died on Everest and from where we have a beautiful panorama of the peaks lying on the Nepal-Tibet border. The trail then eases off as we follow the valley to Lobuche, a tiny hamlet with a few teahouses. The sunset on Nuptse is not to be missed.
We walk uphill through narrow glacier-cut paths along the huge Khumbu glacier to Gorak Shep at 5180m, marveling at the sights of the Everest and Pumori mountains.
About three hours away from Gorak Shep is our destination – the Everest Base Camp and then ascend to Kalapatthar. Drink in the sights and take the higher route on the leg back to see the great Khumbu icefall going back to Gorak Shep where we will spend the night.
We walk downhill, back the same way we came up, to spend the night at Ferutche.
We retrace our steps, stopping at Pangboche to see the monastery.
Namche is a good place to relax, with its many restaurants.
This is the last day of our trek and a great day to celebrate your accomplishment – the conquest of one of the greatest iconic treks in the world. Also, this is the final day- a good day to sample the local rice liquor ‘chyang’ and make merry with the guide and porters.
Return to Kathmandu on the scenic flight from Luka, drinking in the last of the great Himalayan sights as the final day approaches. Relax in one of the many shopping / clubbing areas in Kathmandu
